Tips for a safe journey from Melbourne Airport

It’s exciting to arrive in Melbourne to start your studies. There will be many questions about your new neighborhood, your studies and your new life here in Victoria. The first question that you must answer upon arrival at the airport is “How can I safely travel to my new home?”

These are our top tips to ensure a safe trip from Melbourne International Airport or Avalon Airport.

1. Do not take a ride from an unregistered taxi driver

While it is common for drivers to offer rides to passengers at airport pick-up locations around the globe, this practice is prohibited in Australia.

Do not accept a ride offered by anyone.

2. Take a taxi to your destination

In Australia, taxi drivers do not approach passengers directly. They wait at a designated taxi rank. You can find signs at the airport to direct you to the taxi rank. Only accept rides from taxis that you see there.

3. You should look for registered taxis

The State Government registers taxis in Victoria. Every registered taxi has the words “Accredited Taxi Service” on its license plate. Taxis are typically yellow or silver and should have dark green license plates. You should not get in a taxi without the license plate clearly indicating that it is licensed.

These number plates are only available to licensed Melbourne taxis. Learn more on how to catch a taxi from the Commercial Passenger Vehicles site.

4. SkyBus

The only way to get from the airport to Melbourne is by taxi. SkyBus, a bus service that runs 24 hours a days, offers rides from Avalon Airport or Melbourne Airport to Southern Cross Train Station. SkyBus is generally cheaper than taxis, but you will only be taken to the designated stops or bus depot. You can either take a shorter taxi ride from the depot to your new residence or you can buy a Myki card to use Victoria’s public transportation system.

SkyBus is available from airports. SkyBus is a safe and affordable way to get into Melbourne. The main depot is located at Southern Cross station, Melbourne’s CBD. SkyBus has services to St Kilda. Ask your driver for information.

5. Uber Rideshare Service

Uber and other rideshare services like it are legal in Victoria. Uber has two pickup areas at Melbourne airport: one for the T1 terminal, T2 terminals, and T3 terminals. The other is for the T4 terminal. To request a ride, simply go to the pickup zone using your Uber App. Make sure you enter the correct terminal number in your request. T1, T2, or T3?

6. Verify that the service is certified

Use a service that has been verified by your institution or accommodation provider.

Some accommodation providers and institutions offer pick-up services from the airport. You should book these services in advance if you plan to use them. If you do not book these services in advance, they will not be available at the airport.

You must verify that your driver is authorized to drive. Before you agree to the ride, ask them to confirm your booking.

7. Pick up a friend

Many international students won’t have family or friends when they arrive in Victoria. If you are one of those lucky students, you can ask your family member or friend to pick you up at the airport.
